What to Expect in Your First EMDR Session
Starting a new type of therapy can feel intimidating—especially something you may not fully understand yet.
Let’s take the mystery out of it.
Step 1: You Won’t Jump Into Trauma Right Away
One of the biggest misconceptions is that EMDR immediately dives into painful memories.
It doesn’t.
The first phase is focused on:
- Getting to know you
- Understanding your history
- Building trust and safety
- Teaching grounding tools
Step 2: You Stay in Control the Entire Time
You are not reliving trauma.
You are processing it—with support, pacing, and structure.
A trained therapist guides you, so it feels manageable, not overwhelming.
Step 3: The Goal Is Relief, Not Re-Traumatization
EMDR helps take something that feels intense and make it feel:
- More distant
- Less emotional
- Easier to think about
Many clients leave sessions feeling lighter, clearer, or more settled.
Still Feeling Unsure?
That’s completely normal.
